The Northern Cape is a vast semi-desert region known for it's spectacular floral displays in spring and it's nature reserves and game reserves. If you're traveling along the N12 be sure to stop in Kimberley to see the Big Hole, South Africa's most famous diamond mine. Further south, the South African Astronomical Observatory in Sutherland is home to the newly constructed Southern African Large Telescope. Guided tours are available. The Vanderkloof Dam and the surrounding Rolfontein Nature Reserve is a favourite tourist destination for watersport
enthusiasts, with plenty of windsurfers, sailboats, and powerboats cruising the waters of the dam. Nature lovers and will enjoy the breathtaking serenity and open space of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in that borders with Botswana. If you are traveling along the N14 near Upington, the Augrabies Falls National Park provides spectacular views of the Orange River. |
