Exploring the Drakensberg The Drakensberg Mountains form the border between the mountain kingdom of Lesotho to the west, and the province of Kwazulu Natal below. It's official name is Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park - the Zulu translation of Ukhahlamba being "Barrier of Spears". The park is administered by KZN Wildlife, and is proclaimed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Drakensberg region is a vast area of unspoilt wilderness riddled with dozens of hiking trails. Some of these trails climb straight up the escarpment to the 3000m peaks above, and are suitable for only the fittest hikers. But there are also many contour trails of various distances suitable for day walks. The Sani Pass is the only road that leads up the escarpment to Lesotho. This gravel road is only suitable for 4x4 vehicles. Adrenalin junkies will find plenty of extreme sport activities such as abseiling, mountaineering, and river rafting. But the Drakensberg can also be enjoyed by anyone who appreciates the sheer beauty of it's majestic peaks and green valleys. |
