The small KwaZulu-Natal town of Himeville is to be found just outside the borders of the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park six kilometres from Underberg. Himeville is an excellent place from which to explore the southern reaches of the Drakensberg Mountain Range.
Just outside the town is the Himeville Nature Reserve and Caravan Park, where there are two lakes with a plentiful supply of trout. Angling licenses are issued at the park, which has rowing boats for hire and some excellent braai facilities. The Swamp Nature Reserve close to Himeville is home to the rare Wattled Crane. The Himeville Museum is situated in the old fort, the last of its kind to be built, was used as a prison until 1972, when it became a museum. Wagons, carts and farm implements give some insight as to what life was like in pioneer days. 1600 metres above sea level, Himeville was names after Sir Alfred Hime, the road engineer who became Prime Minister of Natal in 1889.
