If you are visiting King William's Town as a tourist, the Amatole Museum is a "must see", as it boasts the world's largest collection of mammals, including the body of the legendary Huberta - the much loved hippo who in the early 1900's walked more than 1500 km from KwaZulu-Natal to the Eastern Cape, only to be shot dead by hunters one month later.

Of historical value, King William's Town is also the resting place of Steve Biko, leader of the Black Consciousness movement, whose grave is found in the Ginsberg Cemetery, which is now a Garden of Remembrance. Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki also hail from this Eastern Cape area, and many tourists now follow the Nelson Mandela Route from King William’s Town to Umtata / Mthatha, which houses the Nelson Mandela Museum. (See Where to Stay Umtata / Mthatha accommodation page for Umtata / Mthatha Bed & Breakfast accommodation options).

King William's Town, Eastern Cape is worth visiting simply for its natural beauty. The botanical gardens are magnificent, and Jacarandas lining the streets come into flower in spring.
