Widenham is a small village on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast situated just south of Umkomaas. The village is at the mouth of the Mkomazi River. Each year a marathon canoe race is held on the river. The annual sardine run brings the Kwazulu Natal South Coast into a frenzy of excitement each year as the tiny silvery fish migrate northwards. This phenomenon has been named "the Greatest Shoal On Earth" due to the sheer volumes of the small  Empisini Nature Reserve: less than 5 km
The sixty hectare Empisini Nature Reserve is situated on KwaZulu Natal's South coast a short distance from the well known diving community of Umkomaas. The reserve is owned by the Umkomaas town council, and is managed by the Umkomaas Centre of Wildlife  Aliwal Shoal: less than 5 km
During the Sardine Run in June and July huge schools of sardines attract a feeding frenzy of sharks and other predators.
Several diving centres provide equiptment, training, and transport.
